How to build a powerful linux computer for cheap!

Instead of buying a whole new computer system, you can save lots of money by simply upgrading key components that make most of the difference when it comes to solid, fast, and stable computer performance.

How to upgrade your current computer to a solid Linux-Blender machine for very little money. If you already have a computer case, decent hard drive, and decent monitor, then you can upgrade for about $400. This includes a kick ass video card that will cut your Blender rendering times way down.

MSI motherboard

MOTHERBOARD
I picked the MSI 970A-G46 motherboard based on price and the fact that it's designed to support the AMD FX processor. It is well suited for the AMD Quad Core or 6 core, but I wouldn't recommend it for the AMD 8 core. Because of the high power requirements for the 8 core, you need a motherboard designed specifically for the 8 core. A side benefit is that it supports all the latest standards as far as connections go. It handles 32GB of DDR3 (2000) RAM. It has six 6GB/s SATA ports. It has USB 3.0 ports and lots of other state of the art features.

MEMORY - RAM
I know the price of RAM is remaining high these days, but you need to get at least 8GB of DDR3 RAM and I recommend that you get 1 stick so that you can upgrade to 16GB or even 32GB in the future. I picked the Mushkin Essentials 8GB DDR3 UDIMM PC3-10600 9-9-9-24 (part no. 992017)


AMD FX-6300 - CPU Processor
CPU - PROCESSOR
I chose the AMD FX-6300 Vishera 3.5GHz Socket AM3+ 6-Core 32nm Black Edition Processor (Model: FD6300WMHKBOX) because according to Passmark (CPU benchmark testing) it gives you the best bang for the buck. In addition, I feel like a rebel using AMD processors.

Nvidia Gefore GTX 750 Ti - Video Graphics Card
GRAPHICS CARD
Last but not least is the graphics card. I chose the Nvidia Gefore GTX 750 Ti based on two factors. First, it supports the Nvidia CUDA graphics processing, which works well for rendering in Blender. In addition, the GTX 750 was rated the best band for the buck by Passmark in their graphics card comparision chart. The GTX 750 is a kick ass graphics card that cut my typical Blender rendering times from over an hour to less than 5 minutes.
